Finance & Accounting Manager
Take full ownership of Kanpla's accounting across Denmark, the UK and the US, and help build the finance function of a fast-growing scale-up.
About Kanpla
Kanpla helps contract caterers create better dining experiences while cutting food waste. What started as a school project now serves more than 800,000 users across 5,000+ locations in 14 countries.
We're a team of 70+ and are growing aggressively across both Europe, UK & the US.
Our revenue comes from three places: software subscriptions, card payments on our platform, and the hardware and services we sell alongside our software. All of that runs through three legal entities (Denmark, the UK and the US) and three accounting systems. That's a lot of moving parts. So far, our VP of Finance has built and run the accounting setup, with support from our external partner ScaleUp Finance. As we grow, we want a dedicated person to take full ownership of the accounting & monthly close. That's where you come in.
About the role
This is an ownership role. You'll be responsible and accountable for Kanpla's accounting function: the close, the numbers and the processes behind them.
The setup is up and running today, so you won't be starting from scratch. Our VP of Finance will onboard you and hand over the accounting, so you can take full ownership as quickly as possible. From there, the function is yours to run. ScaleUp handles day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll and VAT for our Danish parent company, and Karl, our part-time Finance Associate, supports you on the daily tasks.
Your job is to make sure everything going into the books is complete and correct, and that everything coming out of them is accurate and on time. Over time, we want to bring more of the work in-house and use external partners where it actually makes sense. You'll drive that, together with our VP of Finance.
You'll own finance operations end to end: what we invoice, what we collect, what we pay, what we pay our people, how we close the books and what we owe in VAT. That covers Denmark (e-conomic), the UK (Xero) and the US (QuickBooks).
We're also tidying up our structure across countries and investing heavily in automation, AI and data across the company, including a move to a new group-wide accounting / ERP system down the line. So there's plenty to build, not just to maintain.
This is a hands-on role, not a pure reporting job. You'll be accountable for making sure our numbers can be trusted, and you'll keep improving the processes behind them.
What you'll do
Run the group close (monthly, quarterly and year-end) and lock the numbers on time, reviewing ScaleUp Finance's work along the way.
Own AR and AP end to end: invoicing, collections, bank reconciliation and supplier payments.
Make sure revenue matches across CRM, billing and accounting.
Own VAT reporting across our markets, working with our external advisers.
Manage payroll in Denmark, the UK and the US, including Employer of Record setups.
Keep hardware margins on budget and sales in line with Incoterms and VAT, together with our Head of Hardware.
Prepare financial statements and support budgeting and variance analysis.
Be the main point of contact for our auditors.
Keep improving controls and processes, and cut manual work.
What you'll bring
There's more than one route into this role. Strong candidates will probably bring most of the following:
4+ years in accounting or finance operations, in a growing international company or an audit or accounting firm.
Solid knowledge of Danish accounting rules, as our parent company operates under Danish law.
Hands-on experience owning a month-end close, ideally with an external accounting partner.
Solid AR, AP and European VAT experience.
Experience with e-conomic, Xero or QuickBooks, and the confidence to learn the others fast.
Precision with reconciliations, and the habit of finding the root cause.
The judgement to push back, and the pragmatism to find a way that works.
Clear written English.
Nice to have
Experience from an international scale-up.
Payroll experience, ideally across countries.
UK or US accounting (or you'll pick it up on the job).
ERP implementation or migration experience.
Experience with hardware or Incoterms.
Danish language skills.
What we offer
Real ownership, with a direct line to the VP of Finance.
A broad role across three countries, software, hardware, payments and payroll.
The chance to shape our finance function, and grow with it.
A competitive salary and real support for your development.
Remote-first working and two off-sites or workcations a year.
Practical details
This is a full-time, permanent role, ideally based in Copenhagen, where our VP of Finance and the rest of the finance team sit. It covers our entities in Denmark, the UK and the US.
You'll report to Felix, our VP of Finance, and be part of a small finance team that also includes Karl, our part-time Finance Associate, who helps with accounts receivable, accounts payable, VAT and billing. Day to day, you'll work with Customer Success, Sales and Operations on invoicing and collections, and with our Head of Hardware on hardware. Externally, you'll work with ScaleUp, our auditors, tax advisers, payroll and Employer of Record providers, and payment partners.
We review applications on a rolling basis and aim to fill the role as soon as possible.
